History

California’s central coast was inhabited by the Chumash Indians until 1769 when Don Gaspar de Portola traveled through the area to establish new territory for the king of Spain and begin to establish missions.  Because of the abundance of bears in theSan Luis Obispoarea, his troops named the area as llano do los Osos, or the level of the bears, since then translated to LaCanadade los Osos – Canyon of the Bears.

After California’s annexation to Mexico in 1822, Mexican government officials and retired Army officers, with their eyes on the huge tracts of Mission lands, pushed for secularization of the missions.  During the Rancho period, nearly ½ million acres of land were distributed to Mexican citizens.  This ranch, part of RanchoCanadade los Osos granted in the 1840’s, has been in the hands of the Tonini family since 1889.
